KZ and KZ2 European Championships conclude in Mülsen, Germany

Third and final round of the FIA European Championship KZ and KZ2 this week at the German circuit of Mülsen. From Thursday, July 17 to Sunday, July 20, the continental titles for 2025 will be awarded on this technical track in Saxony, even though the sporting value of this season has been heavily compromised by the well-known tire issues.

The latest development on this matter came about ten days ago from the FIA, under strong pressure from the teams, with a change in the sole tire supplier. Starting from this very race in Germany, the new supplier is Le Cont. The Italian company has built solid experience with the Shifter categories, and the entire paddock is hoping for a problem-free weekend from this point of view.

Private testing carried out by various teams over the past few days with the Le Cont “Prime” tires has definitely been positive, and this race will also be very useful for a series of technical assessments that will feed into the preparation plan for the KZ and KZ2 World Championship — the most important event of the year for the Shifter categories — scheduled for October in Italy.

The CRG Racing Team will be in Germany with its official drivers: Viktor Gustavsson in KZ, along with Paavo Tonteri, Alvar Siimesvaara, and Menyhert Krozser in KZ2. The goal will be to bounce back from what has so far been a difficult season, as CRG has consistently chosen not to compromise its technical principles to adapt to the tires used up to the previous round. However, with Le Cont, the team immediately regained pace in long runs as well as in single-lap performance during testing last week.

A key focus for the CRG drivers and the team’s technicians will be to test some setup solutions and accessories — another reason why this weekend promises to be especially interesting to follow.

The event schedule includes the final free practice sessions on Friday, followed by qualifying in the afternoon. Saturday will be dedicated to the qualifying heats, while Sunday will host the Super Heats and Finals. There are still many championship points up for grabs, and even though the CRG drivers are no longer in contention for the title — neither in KZ with Gustavsson nor in KZ2 with Tonteri — it is still possible to recover ground and finish the championship in the top 5.
