GB3: Ninovic and Schwarze win on Sunday at Zandvoort as Aussies fill top-three in standings

Rodin Motorsport’s Alex Ninovic and VRD Racing’s Hugo Schwarze were the winners on Sunday at Zandvoort, while Australian drivers have taken over at the top of the championship standings. Ninovic claimed his first GB3 victory in race two this morning, while Schwarze took his own maiden win after a chaotic final contest. Australian trio Patrick Heuzenroeder, Ninovic and Noah Lisle fill the top-three in the standings heading to Spa-Francorchamps in a fortnight’s time.

Race two
Ninovic started from pole position, secured in yesterday’s second qualifying session, and he made a strong start to head the field down to turn one. Meanwhile, Xcel Motorsport’s Heuzenroeder, starting third, moved up to second at the expense of Hitech TGR’s Deagen Fairclough, who bogged down again off the line and dropped to fourth early on, before moving past Reza Seewooruthun early on.

The front three of Ninovic, Heuzenroeder and Fairclough lapped as one for much of the race, but the top-two eventually broke away. Ninovic had the race in control and took victory by half a second from his countryman, while Fairclough was over three seconds further back to claim his second podium of the weekend. Argenti with Prema’s Seewooruthun, Hitech’s Nikita Johnson and Seewooruthun’s teammate Yuanpu Cui completed the top-six.

Race three
Starting fourth on the top-12 reverse grid, Schwarze moved past Hitech’s Keanu Al Azhari and polesitter Kai Daryanani on the first lap, and then capitalised on a mistake from Elite’s front row starter Will Macintyre a lap later to move into the lead.

The race was punctuated by two safety car periods, denying Schwarze the chance to break clear of the pack, but he controlled the restarts well and took the chequered flag three tenths clear of Macintyre, with Al Azhari banking a first podium in third.

Fairclough battled from 11th on the grid to fourth ahead of JHR’s Lisle, with Johnson completing the top-six despite a hairy moment at turn three when the American steered clear of a three car tangle. Championship leader Heuzenroeder took seventh to cap off his best weekend yet in GB3.

Race two winner Ninovic said:
"It's definitely a weekend of Aussies at the front! I'm quite happy with the result, to come away with the win in race two is really good and shows all the work we've been putting in has paid off. It was a tough race keeping Pat off our back, but I managed to do the best I could and come away with the win. I can't ask for much more."

"The start was really good, from there I was just managing the gap and really try not to make any mistakes and take pressure off myself. The gap stayed the same throughout the whole race so it was a close race, but I managed to keep ahead."

Race three winner Schwarze said: "It feels awesome. When I joined this weekend, I thought maybe we could aim for the top-10, but winning the final race is obviously a dream come true."

"I have to fly back to England tonight to do a maths exam tomorrow morning! Some celebrations will happen, but there'll be a bit of revision too tonight! There was a small twitch from Will going into turn three, and I just took advantage of that. I had a moment myself, but came out of it on top."
