Wharton makes the jump to FRECA with PREMA Racing

James Wharton will step up to the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine with PREMA Racing in 2024, the team is proud to announce.

Wharton made his car racing debut with the team in 2022 coming from karting. The young Australian, born in 2006, quickly got his first wins in the Formula 4 UAE Championship and went on to a positive European campaign, collecting a win and multiple podium finishes in the Italian and German Formula 4 championships. At the end of his rookie year, he took fifth place overall in both series.

For 2023, he continued his winning form, taking the Formula 4 UAE title early in the season. He then achieved fourth place in the Italian championship and fought for the new Euro4 Championship title before settling as a runner-up. For 2024, he will make the step to the challenging European series and compete on 10 of Europe’s finest racetracks.

With PREMA’s four-car lineup now complete, the team is now looking forward to the pre-season preparations.

Rene Rosin – Team Principal
“We have had a great relationship with James so far, and we look forward to having him with us for 2024 as well. He always fought for wins and podiums in every championship, so we trust him to be able to do the same in FRECA. We know this is a particularly tricky series, but we are confident we will manage to make all the steps we need to maximize our potential together and have a successful learning experience.”

James Wharton
“I’m super excited to continue and make the next step of my career alongside my second family. I can’t wait to get started and keep making the steps we have been for the last two seasons of Formula 4! I feel honoured to have the confidence from Rene and I thank the team for giving me the opportunity for the next step.”
