Kart CRG: FIA World Cup OKN and OKN Junior in Italy this weekend

From today until Sunday, September 28, the Cremona Circuit in Italy will host the FIA World Cup for the OKN and OKN Junior categories. For CRG, this international meeting is a very important event, as it brings together under the FIA’s banner the best drivers from the National OKN Championships — the categories that are being promoted to support the growth of our sport at the national level.

These categories were introduced three years ago by the FIA with the goal of revitalizing direct drive classes in national championships, a market segment that in recent years had been dominated mainly by single-make trophies. The FIA’s proposal worked from the very first year, and in many countries, the number of drivers and teams competing in the National OKN Championships is growing significantly.

From a technical perspective, OKN engines follow the same philosophy as the OK engines used in international categories, so without clutches and with some adjustments to make them easier to use on track. Karting needs solid competitive activity within national championships, and the effectiveness shown by the OKN categories is definitely a positive signal in this regard.

There will be 90 drivers in each of the two classes competing in Cremona, guaranteeing plenty of on-track action. CRG will support drivers who qualified with partner teams in their respective championships, fielding a total of 9 drivers. In OKN, the category for drivers over 13 years old, Italian Alessio Baldi and Brazilian Bernardo Gentil will defend CRG’s colors, while in OKN Junior, there will be as many as 7 drivers: Nicholas Guth, Cristobal Bonnet, Eli Steinbruch, Guilherme Busato, Francisco Rocha, and siblings Jason and Nefeli Kosmopoulos.

The event program includes free practice today, qualifying sessions and heat races tomorrow and Saturday, and finally, on Sunday, the Super Heats and the Finals. In last week’s tests, all CRG drivers showed excellent potential, and now it’s time to put together all the preparation work and aim for a leading weekend. The forecast is variable, but at the moment, good weather is expected for Sunday’s Finals.
