Karting talent Moritz Mohr surprises with podium finish in GK4 Kart Series

KERPEN - A remarkable second place for a remarkable driver. Moritz Mohr proved on Saturday evening during the third round of the GK4 Kart Series that he can reach the podium in his debut season in the IAME X30 Senior National class. The thirteen-year-old German from Hofheim demonstrated on the historic Kerpen circuit that he can already hold his own against older drivers in the Senior class.

For Moritz, the podium finish came as a pleasant surprise. "I'm definitely happy with P2! I didn't expect it at all", he said modestly.

The weekend started well with the second-fastest time in qualifying. In the first heat, Moritz dropped to fourth place. "It was very difficult at the start", he explained. However, he recovered in the second heat with another second-place finish, securing a strong starting position for the final.

The final became a showcase of his racing ability. Starting from the dirty outside line - a major disadvantage at Kerpen - Moritz managed to hold second position. "It's really hard to maintain second place here, especially through turn one", he explained. After briefly falling back, he fought his way forward again and even took the lead. "I led for a few laps but unfortunately got passed again."

This podium marked a breakthrough in Moritz's season. "This is my best result this year - my previous best was P7", he said proudly. The progress has been years in the making. The young German has been karting for five years, starting at age eight. "My father raced karts, so we went to a rental track. My brother and I thought it was awesome!"

He began in a small Puffo kart, and his passion for motorsport grew from there. One of his first races was actually at Kerpen. "So I have quite a bit of experience here", he said about the circuit where Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel built the foundation for their Formula 1 careers.

Moritz knows he's racing on hallowed ground. "I know eleven Formula 1 titles were born here. It's really important for both the country and the track", he said respectfully. When asked if he could be the next champion to emerge from Kerpen, he was realistic but ambitious. "Formula 1 will be tough, but maybe I'll get into GT racing. That would be really cool too."

His GK4 podium has boosted Moritz's confidence for upcoming races. He also competes in the IAME Series Benelux this season. "Now I know I can fight for wins", he said. His next challenge is the GK4 round at Mariembourg, a track he knows well. With his new confidence and proven pace, he hopes to maintain his momentum. "Now that I've been on the podium, I hope I can do it again there!"

Moritz thanks VDK for the chassis, his mechanic Cedric, his supportive family, and his tuner MPK Engines.
