French racing driver Anthoine Hubert (22 September 1996 – 31 August 2019) died today after a major crash in the Formula 2 at the track of Spa-Francorchamps during the Belgium Grand Prix-weekend. Hubert was involved in a serious crash with Juan Manuel Correa on lap 2 of the 2019 Spa-Francorchamps Formula 2 feature race. After being transported to the circuit medical center post-crash, he died from his injuries. Like many young drivers, Hubert started his career in karting.
His first steps in karting were in 2004. Anthoine became third in Minikart in both Coupe de France and Championnat Régional IDF, where he became champion the following year in 2005. In 2006 he made the step to the Minimes-class finishing third and second in the Championnat Régional IDF. In 2007 won the Bridgestone Cup and moved up in 2008 to the Cadet-class and became champion in the Trophée Valentinois and the Trophée de l'Armistice and second in the Championnat de France, Bridgestone Cup and the Championnat Régional IDF. In 2009 he was successful in the Trophée de France, Coupe de France and Championnat Régional IDF.
In 2010 he made his international debut in the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy, where he finished as runner-up. In both 2011 and 2012 he finished third in the CIK-FIA U18 World Karting Championship.
In 2013, Hubert moved up to single-seater racing, joining the French F4 Championship. He won the series on his first attempt, finishing the season with eleven wins and two further podium finishes. In 2014, he graduated to competing in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 with Tech 1 Racing. For the 2015 season, Hubert remained in the Eurocup and with Tech 1. Anthoine finished fifth in the championship with wins at Silverstone and Le Mans and five podiums. In February 2016, it was confirmed that Hubert would make his debut in the European Formula 3 Championship, racing with Van Amersfoort Racing. He took his first Formula 3 win in the second race at Norisring.
In February 2017, he was recruited by ART to compete in the 2017 GP3-championship. In 2018 he became champion in the FIA F3 and promoted in 2019 in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, where Hubert joined BWT Arden. He won in Monaco and Paul Ricard. As member of the young driver program with the Renault Sport Academy, he received in 2019 full backing in 2019 from the Academy. He had a bright future ahead and was dreaming of Formula 1...
