Luka Wlömer wins DEKM title 2020

This year, the drivers travelled to the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben for the final of the German Electric Kart Championship (DEKM). In the fight for the title, the weather caused a lot of tension again, in the end Diego Stifter and Axel La Flamme won the final races – Luka Wlömer wins the championship title in the third attempt.

Only seven weeks after the season opener in Kerpen, the season final took place in the Magdeburg Börde. After 2018, the DEKM started for the second time on the 1,018 meter long track of the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.

The focus was on the title fight: With Luka Wlömer (ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg), Joel Mesch, Diego Stifter (Millennium Racing Team) and Axel La Flamme (AXR Racing), four drivers still had the chance for the championship. The weather provided tension until the end. Saturday and Sunday it rained and caused some excitement when choosing the right tires.

Diego Stifter wins narrow final on Saturday

Joel Mesch repeated his pole position from Wackersdorf in the rain on Saturday and started first in the pre-final. The top hung together as usual and changed the lead several times in the early stages of the race. Later on, however, a duo emerged in the battle for the victory with Mesch and La Flamme. The latter started to attack one lap before the end and won ahead of Mesch and Stifter.

In the final, difficult conditions awaited the electric kart drivers. Only the ideal line had dried up and required full concentration. For pre-final winner La Flamme, the race began with a setback even before the start. The driver from London was late in the pre-grid and had to start from the end of the field. In the meantime, Stifter had the best start and deducted himself from his chasers during the course of the race. He did not let himself unhinge by the onset of rain and celebrated his second victory of the season after Wackersdorf. Behind him, Wlömer left no stone unturned and collected important championship points in front of the third-placed Elijah A. Saia. Mesch and La Flamme, on the other hand, had to retire.

Victories for Joel Mesch and Axel La Flamme on Sunday

Sunday was a completely new ball game for the DEKM. On a dry track, Axel La Flamme was the fastest driver in qualifying in the field of the electric karts Project E20 by BRP-Rotax. From pole position, however, he did not have an easy pre-final. After a quartet with Mesch, Stifter and Wlömer fought for the victory at the beginning, only Mesch and La Flamme remained to the halfway point of the race. Two laps before the end, the British driver took the lead and defended it to the finish. But a front fairing penalty for the winner turned the placements again and so Joel Mesch won ahead of Axel La Flamme and Luka Wlömer.

Just in time for the last final of the year, heavy rain set in again. The whole field started with rain tires and experienced the most adverse conditions. At the top, La Flamme experienced a lonely race. Early on, he drove away from his chasers and won by a clear lead over Wlömer and Mesch. The duo changed positions again shortly before the checkered flag fell. For the second Wlömer it was enough to win the championship. After the runner-up title in 2019, he now brings the title to Berlin. “I am speechless. It’s been a difficult year, in the end I didn’t win a final, but I always scored very consistently. Many thanks to my mother for the great support as my mechanic”, says the happy champion in the interview.

Attractive prices for the drivers of the DEKM

In addition to winning the championship, Wlömer can look forward to a lot more to. Porsche Motorsport accompanies him in the racing driver development with various training programs. In addition, he receives a test day in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport with Team Allied Racing and an Arai karting sport helmet voucher from DEKM partner Point Racing. At the same time, champion Wlömer and runner-up Mesch will be invited to the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals in Portimão, Portugal. The two are supported by Jasmin Stein, who was drawn among the DEKM participants and receives the third ticket for the World Final in Portugal.

Looking to the future – DEKM 2021 in planning phase

“We look back on an exciting seven weeks. It was a very exciting season for the entire team around our partner BRP-Rotax as well as our participants. The new E-Kart Project E20 was convincing all along the line, making the DEKM even more attractive. We are already working on a calendar for 2021 with high pressure and are once again putting together an attractive package for the fourth season. Our congratulations go to Luka Wlömer, he has been in the DEKM since the first season and has more than earned the championship title. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, the organizers and all officials for the realization of this challenging season”, Oliver Schielein, Managing Director of the DEKM promoter IKmedia, concludes.

Excerpt from the overall championship stand:

  1. Luka Wlömer (212 Punkte)
  2. Joel Mesch (192 Punkte)
  3. Axel La Flamme (179 Punkte)
  4. Diego Stifter (172 Punkte)
  5. Elijah Alessandro Saia (150 Punkte)
